Minesweepers: Towards a Landmine-Free Egypt

Minesweepers: Towards a Landmine-free Egypt is a national robotic competition aimed at fostering robotics research and its applications in the area of humanitarian demining in Egypt. The German University in Cairo (GUC) will host this year’s event on its terrain during September 16-18, 2012.

Egypt has been listed as the country most contaminated by landmines in the world with an estimate of approximately 23,000,000 landmines. This fact reflects the level of seriousness of landmines in Egypt. The contaminated areas in the North Coast, Gulf of Suez and Red Sea coasts are now being reclaimed for economic development so mine clearance is becoming an urgent priority for the Egyptian government.

Minesweepers will be the first national robotic competition with high social impact due to tackling a serious problem of humanitarian demining in Egypt. Minesweepers will raise the public awareness of the role of science and technology in solving this problem and will motivate professors, engineers and students working in this pertinent area of national importance.

In Minesweepers each participating team will construct a teleoperated or an autonomous robot that should be able to search for underground and aboveground anti-personnel mines and produce a map of the detected mines. The robot has to be able to navigate through rough terrain that mimics a real minefield.

Minesweepers will be organized by IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (RAS) Egypt chapter and sponsored and hosted by the German University in Cairo (GUC). The competition is supported by Executive Secretariat for the Demining & Development of the North West Coast, Ministry of International Cooperation, Mines Action & Human Rights Foundation and Protection Against Armaments & Consequences.

IEEE has agreed to offer a link to broadcast a set of Webinars (Web Seminars) prepared by IEEE RAS Egypt to help the participating team in constructing the demining robots covering different related topics such as locomotion systems, environment perception, robot navigation and wireless communication.
